The West Virginia State Penitentiary is the most haunted place in united states. The West Virginia State Penitentiary located in Moundsville, West Virginia. It’s a retired, gothic style prison. The Penitentiary was operated from 1876 to 1995, but now the site is maintained for tourist attraction and training facility. The Penitentiary was the final stop for almost 1000 criminals.
In the Penitentiary, the prisoners lived in cramped quarters, which led to riots. Many men were hanged and killed in the electric chair. Others were murdered by by other prisoners. According to some people, the tortured spirits are still behind bars and in the bowels of the prison and may be seen or heard during the tour.
Tours are available for tourists who were wishing to see the prison. Even a festival held in may to remember and celebrate historic Moundsville.”Dungeon of Horrors” a haunted attraction is also set up in the Halloween season. There are several reports of “Shadow Man” wandering in the premises, as well as unexpected and unexplained noises, voices, and cold spots are also seen.
After the prison close, now the Penitentiary is also used for police training. The Penitentiary is uded for training law enforcement and corrections practitioners with regular mock drills.
